African Violets are a member of the Gesneriaceae family, and come from the tropical rainforest region of east Africa near the border of Tanzania and Kenya. They are not related to true violets, but boast colorful flowers that emerge as violet-look a likes.
It is a low, compact houseplant with attractive dark green (and sometimes variegated), thick, fuzzy leaves, and lovely purple or white flowers.
